The Daggering debate: Can’t it just be done with now?

The Daggering debate: Can’t it just be done with now?

I’m sure you’re all aware of the recent debacle over the controversial “Daggering” songs that were flooding the airwaves since last year and then eventually getting banned by the Broadcasting Commission and in my opinion, uptight, oppressive uptown people (or high class people for those who misunderstand). I don’t have a problem with all uptown people, but you will surely have an idea what I’m talking about. Anyway, while I’m all for disallowing the songs to be deemed not fit for commercial airplay due to their explicit content, why do people STILL fight against them?

As history has shown it, most things that have been banned, its popularity is increased and there is more support for them. In this case when “Ramping Shop” was banned from the local media (Radio, TV), everywhere you went after the ban you heard it. It was played on numerous cell phones, MP3 players, computers, sound systems at your local dances, and in mix CDs played in your regular taxis and buses. Admit it, you were addicted to the song. It became a way of life (LOL!), it became lyrical cancer, it grew on you…

The point is, the Commission banned it, fine, but why is it still an issue on talk shows and newspaper articles? Everyday you would hear a disgruntled caller complaining about how evil the song is, writers argue about how lewd the lyrics are, blah, blah, blah…COME ON! Slack lyrics aren’t new, in fact they have been around since the days of King Yellowman (Google him or Wikipedia), plus the lyrics in “Ramping Shop” aren’t nothing compared to numerous songs before it. Get yourself some ‘80s and ‘90s dancehall (Shabba Ranks, Yellowman etc…), check out the lyrics.

This situation is like beating a dead horse, it’s pointless! The ban was directed by people who overall didn’t like the dancehall culture, in this case the people in high positions in society who dislike everything in dancehall. But do you notice that when it’s time to gain popularity from society they piggyback on dancehall by playing and dancing to the songs? Such hypocrisy! I’m sure they are at home plotting on ways to further oppress dancehall. BIG UP to Vybz Kartel and Spice for making a very creative song. The “Daggering” songs were different too, and touched everyone, however they are not for kids no matter how exciting they sound. I read about “Daggering Parties” for kids where they are having sex with grown people and kids their age and that is just plain wrong. At this point, I just wish people would just let go and stop arguing about the songs, it’s tiresome. I believe there are much worse things to focus their energy on now, like the crime rate and poverty. “Ramping Shop” was not the first song to be banned, but the ban makes them look like pioneers now thus giving them lot of “Forwards”.

What you think? Talk the things… Much Love, Swade86
